Osaka had taken a few days to thoroughly search all the spots Heiji might have hid in. Even if everyone else already looked, they might have missed something. She had to see it for herself he wasn't there. And as to be expected, she found nothing.

Tokyo wasn't as hard. They'd only visit a few times, after all, but still, she found nothing. She even checked out Kudo's house, hoping to maybe find the detective boy and see if he knew something, but still, nothing. Just that guy who was invited to stay there.

And now she was here, in Kyoto. They'd come often enough as kids. She checked out all the places, but she couldn't find a single clue, let alone him.

She didn't know why she came here, to this old temple. It wasn't a hang out, per say. Then again...

That time, when Heiji supposedly saw his 'first love' this had been one of the places he went too while they weren't around each other. Though she never did find him when she went looking for him. It had been insane, him saying SHE was his first love. There was no way that was possible. Still, maybe that might mean he was here, because he was thinking of that time? Of course if this wasn't the place, she'd have to move on to some other town.

"Don't give up yet, Kazuha. He just might be here," she told herself, not wanting to give up hope. So she stepped onto the temple grounds and began looking around. "Heiji! Heiji! Are you here?"

Heiji wasn't exactly hiding. Just sitting enough out of plain sight that most people would completely miss him sitting there. He was sleeping lightly, leaning against the wall with his jacket as a pillow and his bag tucked against his side safely. A pair of headphones was really the only excuse that he didn't hear her coming.

His week away hadn't been uneventful, and he didn't come away from it entirely unscathed. With the urge to do something he'd supposedly grown out of, he'd gotten into fights with several gang punks. Having known where to linger to draw them out, he had no trouble making his own reputation against various groups as a fighter. It helped him vent, and clear his head. And every second he spent recovering from various bruises and cuts meant he had that much more time to think.

Today, luckily for Kazuha, was one of his recovery periods; taking refuge in this shrine so no one could really ambush him and get away with it. His ribs were sore from a fight he nearly lost and a white bandage was partially hidden under his sleeve where some moron had pulled a knife on him. (Said moron didn't last very long. No one should pull weapons out in a fist fight.) But otherwise he seemed fine, if a little tired.

"Hei-" Kazuha paused mid call when she caught sight of Heiji out of the corner of her eye when she entered the shrine. There he was, asleep against the wall. "Heiji," she said softly and walked towards him.

Well, if she had him unaware, she could at least get a good look at him. She kneeled down in front of him, studying him worriedly. He'd look like he got in a fight. He was didn't look like he was suffering and he was breathing, so he must have won. And if he was listening to music, he couldn't be afraid he was going to get attack again.

So, just some bad luck? Stopping a mugger or something. That seemed likely. "Ahou. Still running off and getting into trouble," she muttered. Still, she found him, safe and sound.

She pulled out her cell phone, sending a text to his parents that Heiji was fine and she found him before shutting off her phone so they couldn't interrupt them.

She had to talk to Heiji, after all. She reached up, yanking off his headphones. "Oi, ahou, time to get up," she said in an annoyed, slightly raised, voice. She was still annoyed at him, even with her worry.

It took him less than a second to react to 'OHSHI- someone's here!!'.

It took him five seconds for his brain to catch up from sleep and supply the 'who' in that assessment.

His hand was on her arm, his own arm extended in a push; his initial instinct to keep her away while he got his bearings, and he already had his feet under him so he could move quickly if he needed to. The surprise was clear on his face as well, although in the first few seconds it was more of a wide eyed panic than the shock in turned into when he recognized her.

Clearly a normal mugger fight wouldn't have made so jumpy.

He swallowed hard, steadying his breathing; mouth dry. It took his two tries to speak, finally relaxing enough so he no longer felt like he was getting attacked. "K-Kazuha!?"

Kazuha's eyes widened as he grabbed her, jerking back at the other hand, grunting a bit when she fell back from the crouch on her butt. "H-hey!" She yelped.

Why in the world was Heiji so jumpy?1 He never acted like this when she woke him up before. And it wasn't like she even jumped on him or anything.

Something was wrong. Something was very wrong.

Kazuha looked at him worriedly. "Heiji? Are you okay?" She asked.

This was bad. This was very bad. He didn't know why, but she was the last person he'd expected to see.

He realized he still had his hand outstretched and pulled it back suddenly, wiping his face as he tries to stall; collecting his thoughts together.

"Sorry..." He apologized, taking a deep breath. "...kind'va bad dream..."

Kazuha moved to be sitting on her knees, looking at him worriedly. When he moved his hand to wipe his face, she caught sight of the bandage, her eyes widening. He'd actually gotten wounded?!

And he says it was a bad dream? How did a dream spook him that much. He looked ready to bolt!

"Heiji, what happened to you?!" Kazuha demanded, looking more worried.

He shook his head, yawning slightly. Man, he was sore. They'd tried holding him down. Almost worked. "Just...walked on the wrong side of th' street." Intentionally. "M'all right. More importantly, what are YOU doing here?" Heiji could tell from the look on her face that she wasn't going to believe him though.

How was he expected to tell her what he'd been up to? That he was going out and beating up thugs for sport instead of any actual lawful reason? That he was getting tired of always abiding by the law all the time. Not only was it boring, but the law wasn't always right or just anyway.

"I've been looking for you as soon as I came back from my trip, ahou!" Kazuha snapped. "We've all been worried sick, with you just vanishing. I've been looking all over Osaka, Tokyo, and Kyoto, telling myself you'll be fine, but I find you like this!" She said, leaning closer, looking him over to see if there was anything else she missed.

"And you did not just get jumped by muggers! You looked like you were ready to fight or fly, Heiji," She said, her voice calming down a bit, but still worried.

"Well I hardly expected YOU to be here yankin' my headphones off of me alluvasudden, now did I?" He frowned at her. It was a poor cover. But he couldn't tell her what he'd been doing. He'd have to think of something else.

"Wasn't expectin' anyone." His answer was quiet and evasive.

Heiji moved to stretch but cut it short as his bruises protested. "Did expect to wake up till morning.

The action didn't escape her eyes. What had he been doing?

"...you were scared, Heiji, that something bad would happen. And you left, got yourself hurt this bad, and didn't even think to return home?" Kazuha asked, her voice growing quiet. "Did you...really want to leave that badly?"

What was he supposed to say when she had that look in her eyes? He turned away, hunched over somewhat. He just couldn't stay home. He felt too humiliated and out of sorts with himself and it hurt him to lie to her.

even though he found himself doing it more and more often. "I told you it was dangerous."

From: [identity profile] aikido-2-dan.livejournal.com
"But that's not why you left," Kazuha said, looking down. "'I can't take this anymore. I'm sick of everything. Sick of bein' humiliated. Sick of bein' looked over. I'm not an idiot, an' I hate that everyone who looks at me sees an idiot. ...I can't stay here,'" she quoted. She'd been studying the post most of the time on the trains, trying to think of anything that might help find Heiji.

And help bring him back. "It posted on your journal, your thoughts. And it coincided with when your parents said you walked out."

Once again he had to sit, stunned. That HAD been what he was thinking when he left but... "My laptop wasn't even ON." He complained.

"And you think that would really stop the community from broadcasting it, Heiji?" Kazuha asked. The community seemed to thrive on doing what people want the least.

Even if it helped others who might be worried about them.

"You have a point." He leaned back against the wall and stared at the ceiling. Great. It was probably an open post too. Which meant everyone and their mom could see it. Small wonder that Kazuha was the only one here.

Good thing, too, since if either of the other detectives were there they'd put together what he'd been doing in a heartbeat.

Kazuha stared at him worriedly. Why was she here alone? Well, she didn't WAIT for anyone else. She went where she thought she might find him. Cost a pretty penny to for all those tickets, but it was worth it. And now she was here, and found him.

"...you are an ahou," Kazuha said, reaching out to take his hand. "But that's not all I see you as. It's just you do stupid things sometimes, but you're absolutely brilliant too. You're...amazing. Always going to help anyone who needs it, no matter the risk to yourself. You'd help anyone when they needed help. Not to mention you're funny and strong and always so relaxed, it's hard not to end up feeling better around you," she continued, looking at him sadly.

"Maybe some people look over you...but I don't! And...and even when I'm angry and upset at you, I won't abandon you. I can't ever overlook you."

"Stupid. And yer saying I'm actin' weird." His lips were twitching slightly in a grin as he tried not to laugh. It wasn't funny. At all. But it was a sort of helpless laugh.

He shook his head and pulled her closer so he could hug her, the action, at least, hopefully saying what his words definitely weren't. "I wasn't thinking about you when I left like that. It was a spur of th' moment thing." More like progressing doubts that he still couldn't figure out. "I just needed to have some time t' think and I couldn't exactly do that when the community was projecting my thoughts to anyone who'd listen. I told you M'all right."

From: [identity profile] aikido-2-dan.livejournal.com
"Of course I'm acting weird! Everything is weird," Kazuha said defensively. At least one thing about the trip on the trains, she got to think.

She felt her face grow hot at the sudden hug, hesitating a moment before wrapping her arms around him. "But it sounded...like something that was building over a long time," she said quietly, just loud enough for him to hear.

Date: 2009-04-05 04:31 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] kendo-taisho.livejournal.com
He didn't tense up, but he got fairly still. Of course she noticed. She wouldn't have meant that whole thing about not looking him over if she didn't notice a small thing like that. "...how so?"

From: [identity profile] aikido-2-dan.livejournal.com
"I...I don't know exactly how, but you aren't someone whose weak, Heiji. If something like that got to you, it had to be something that's been building, right?" Kazuha asked, moving back to look at him.

"A lot of people who first meet you assume you're not that smart because of how you act. And you said people overlooked you. And humiliation...well, that I'm not all that sure about because I've seen you embarrassed, but I think I could count the times you were really humiliated," Kazuha said. "So if you left for reasons like that, it's because it's been building over time, right?" She asked, looking uncertain. Was that it, or had she really missed more than she thought?

"I'm not sure if it started when I joined the community or back when I met Kudo." He admitted after a moment. It was a convenient evade of the actions he'd taken after running away, and god knows she deserved to know anyway.

Screw the others. He couldn't keep lying like that.

He thought about it for a moment. "After I got shot. I'd always been in danger, but I'd never really directly encountered the men we're trying to stop. It just...got a little too dangerous I guess. I never was much of a detective."

Kazuha stared at Heiji like he'd grown a second head. She opened her mouth, raising a hand to say something and then closed her mouth again, frowning. She scratched the side of her head, trying to process what Heiji just SAID.

"...what?" It was all that would come to her.

He shook his head. "Sure, I'm smart enough t'do it. And I don't mind putting criminals away and solving murders. Putting their spirits to rest. But..." He drifted off and seemed to struggle with what he was saying a little.

"It was all a game to me. I never became a detective out of the need to help people."

Biological weapons.

Those words came to Kazuha's mind. Any group that had that would be huge. And Heiji was involved. Brave, wonderful, strong Heiji finally found a villain that scared him.

"Heiji..." She said quietly and before she could stop herself, wrapped her arms around him and pulled him close again. "Everyone...has to be scared. All those people you deal with, it's only natural and that's why I always worry, but," she paused, her hold tightening a bit, "but I believe in you, Heiji. If you want to take these guys down, I believe you can do it. But if you want to stop...I'll still be there for you. I won't leave you, whatever you want to do. You're too important for me to be able to."

He was quiet for a long moment, not sure what to say. "Kazuha..."

She believed in him. She always believed in him and he'd done nothing but lie to her for the past year. "I'm sorry. If ya want me t' tell ya, I will. Whatever I can. I just...didn't want y t' get hurt tryin' to do somethin' stupid."

Kazuha opened her mouth to say yes, but paused. She didn't want to mess up things now because she spoke without thinking.

She didn't want him to think she only said that so he'd tell her.

"I...want to know because I want to help. I know you're capable, but I'm always scared. Just one stroke of bad luck and who knows what could happen to you," Kazuha said. "If...if you feel you can trust me enough, tell me. And I'll do whatever I can to help and make sure I don't do anything that might put you or me in anymore danger than it already is. I just...want to make sure you make it out all right while you're taking down the bad guy," she said, her holding tightening just a bit around him.

She didn't think he'd do something too stupid, but he might rush in at the wrong time. And that's what scared her.

He shook his head. What was it they said about a secret being harder to keep the more people who knew it?

Heiji hugged her tightly and then broke the hold, shifting so she could sit next to him. There wasn't anyone around, but the quieter he spoke, the better.

"First thing's first. You can -never- tell anyone. You can't let anyone know you know. Okay?"

"I understand," Kazuha said without hesitation. She already knew the reasoning. When either Hakuba said it purposefully or by mistake, biological weapons were to kill a lot.

So it couldn't get anywhere where people knew they knew.

He took a deep breath. "A while ago, Kudo ran into some trouble..." And so he explained, slowly and carefully, so that she understood just how serious this was and why he wasn't sure he could do it anymore.

He left out how Kudo was Conan, saying he just had to go into hiding. Nor did he say anything about how Kaito was Kid (actually mentioned Kid very little other than the fact that he wasn't opposed to helping out the "good guys".)
He didn't mention Haibara either, other than the fact that they were getting help from someone who used to be involved with them.

But despite missing most of the more important key facts, he was fairly thorough with what he knew and noticed. He had his detective face on throughout the entire thing. He was terrified of Them, to be sure, and she knew it, but he wasn't going to just blatantly show it.

Kazuha leaned back when he began to speak, staring at him. Unfortunately, she wasn't as well trained in keeping her expression calm, her eyes widening and looking more and more worried and scared as Heiji spoke.

By the time he was done, she had her hands over her mouth, trying to keep at least a bit of her composure. "Oh, Heiji..."

So much. He'd gotten into so much trouble and such bad things...she suspected something bad, but she hadn't thought...no, she had HOPED it wasn't this bad. People who killed anyone who found out, who didn't stop at anything.

She closed her eyes, bowing her head to hide her expression, taking deep breathes. She needed to calm down. She had to respond rationally. She couldn't panic or freak out now.

She didn't want Heiji to regret telling her.

He bit his lip and looked away, not sure what she was going to do. He risked a lot in telling her, and she could easily tear apart all of their work. He didn't think she would, but it was always a possibility.

"See why I didn't want you to know? See why Kudo keep Neechan in the dark?"

"...it's terrifying," Kazuha said in a quiet voice.

Then after a few moments, she looked up, smiling happily. "But after almost getting eaten by a giant ash monster, I won't run away from this," she said and wagged a finger in a scolding motherly manner. "Personally, I think Kudo-san should tell Ran-chan a bit more so at least she knows her worry is justified, but I won't tell. But you think this would scare me away? I've been following you too long to run now. Especially when aikido works just fine on guys, even if they have guns." It was a forced smile, but she would find somewhere else to freak later, in private.

She just had to maintain the brave face for the moment.

Kazuha paused and coughed. "Uh, well, when we last talked, I got really angry. And I decided I needed some time out of Osaka, so I went on a trip with Dustfinger on the community. He just kind of forgot to mention that there were guys with guns after his way home and that they wanted to resurrect a giant ash monster that eats people," Kazuha explained. "That's why it took so long to find you. I only found out on Friday."

Kazuha grinned. "Well, of course!" She declared. "It didn't take long for them to learn just cause a girl wears a skirt doesn't mean she can't make them cry uncle," she said, sitting up straight with hands on her hips.

"They even wore black...kind of ironic."

He chuckled and leaned over to pillow his head on her shoulder, relieved. He still had his best friend. The world wasn't ending just yet.

He was tired, though. Tired and sore and somewhat guilty because he still had secrets of his own that he would never ever tell her because, well, he just wasn't that ready for honest judgment.

Kazuha blushed when he leaned on her shoulder, but smiled fondly. "You look tired. You rest for a while and then we'll g back home, okay?" Kazuha said, relaxing herself.

She found Heiji and he'd be all right. They'd go back home and reassure his parents he just needed some time alone. After that...well, then they'd decide what to do, right?

It could all wait for a little while though.

He murmured an agreement, closing his eyes. Telling the truth was exhausting, he supposed.

Before long he was dozing off again, safe with Kazuha. He still wasn't sure he wanted to go home yet, but resting he could do.
